mixed-use apartment block

Site: a New Urbanist community in Pittsburgh. The project views New Urbanism as a fake Disney-esqe attempt to create a small-town community without any of the organicism which true community requires. For this reason, it takes a deconstructivist approach intended to be somewhat disconcerting. As the site was in Pittsburgh, the starting point was the steel-mill vernacular so much a part of the area's past.

After breaking up the single volume of the steel mill into small parts (see the diagram), these parts were shifted and rearranged to create the basic form of the block.
